Snowtime! Game

Synopsis

To amuse themselves during the winter school break, the kids in a small village decide to have a massive snowball fight. Luke and Sophie, both 11 years old, become the leaders of the opposing sides. Sophie and her cohort defend an elaborate snow fort against the assault of Luke’s horde. Whichever side occupies the fort at the end of the winter break, wins. But what starts out as pure youthful fun and enthusiasm deteriorates into a more serious conflict. Joy is restored when all the children decide to attack the fort rather than each other and happily destroy every last bit of the snow fort.

Luke

Luke is something of a loner but comfortable in his solitude which serves to mask that he is privately dealing with the death of his father in a war six years before. His most precious memento is a bugle. He is bright and perceptive, and suddenly discovers that he can be not just part of his peer group but leader of it. He is attracted to Sophie.

Chuck

Chuck is not the sharpest tool in the shed – except when it comes to actual tools. He is full of good will, wants to have fun and doesn’t have a mean bone in his body – a gorilla with a heart of gold. He instinctively knows how to needle Manolo, and always wins at arm wrestling. He does not understand the military terminology Luke uses and is particularly puzzled by orders to go to the flanks.

Manolo

One of the better-off children in the village he defines his self-worth by the fancy gadgets he accumulates; he is not particularly keen to share them and feels antsy when they are beyond his reach. He is a bit snarky, particularly when it comes to girls interfering in manly pursuits such as snowball fights.

Jack

Jack is Luke’s best friend. He is jolly and resilient, loyal to a fault and suffers because of it, but he is quick to forgive and forget. Jack supports Luke in everything, although he also pushes Luke to act, for example by attacking the First Graders’ fort.

Henry & Georges Leroux

Henry & Georges are identical twins who not only dress alike but finish each other’s sentences; followers, who have a magnetic need to be in each other’s company, they take play very seriously. They are famous for saying that war is no reason for anyone to get hurt.

Fran

Fran knows her mind and speaks it too. She always has a clever retort and pinpoint observations revealing a very mischievous sense of humor.

Cleo

Cleo is Piers’ dog, although she is really the village dog, loved by all the children – as much for her stinky farts as her playfulness. Cleo has a mind of her own and she is absolutely clear about her wishes. Just as all the children love Cleo, she loves all the children as well.

Frankie

Frankie loves elaborate plans and inventions for things practical and impractical more than anything else. He considers the fort his greatest invention. Best buds with Piers, he calls himself “Four-eyes” for his impressive glasses.

Piers

Piers has one over-riding trait at the core of his being – his intense and unconditional love for his dog Cleo. Piers is tolerant, sociable and easy going, except in the face of unfairness. Then he is quick to call it as he sees it and walk away if necessary.

Sophie

New to the village, she fits in almost instantly. She is good at just about everything she tries, is a champion skier and a natural born leader. But sometimes she goes too far: she gets carried away with her own ideas and plans, pushing them to a disastrous end like filling snowballs with paint.

Lucy

Lucy is Sophie’s little sister and a real fireball. She goes all out in absolutely everything she does, a tornado of action who never pauses to reflect. The worst thing about this new village is that it is infested with stinky boys.

The pacifists

Nicky

Diplomatic and peaceful, Nicky tries to help put an end to conflict – even in play. He believes that a day without war, even pretend war, is a victory for peace. He does not understand why anyone would play at war.

Daniel Blanshire from Victoriaville

Daniel Blanshire is Nicky’s cousin from Victoriaville and an aspiring photojournalist – he’s all for anything that will make a good picture or news story. There’s not a shy bone in his body as he introduces himself to everyone.
